Introduction to the Doha Film Festival

The first Doha Film Festival is set to take place from November 20th to 28th in various locations in Doha, Qatar. The festival will feature a powerful and emotional film, "The Voice of the Hind Rajab", as its opening movie. This film, directed by Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania, has already made a significant impact at the Venice Film Festival, where it won the Silver Lion Grand Jury prize.

The Story Behind the Film

"The Voice of the Hind Rajab" is a retelling of a real event that occurred in January 2024. The film tells the story of Hind Rajab, a five-year-old Palestinian girl who was killed by Israeli forces during the invasion of the Gaza Strip. The movie uses the audio of Rajab’s call to the Red Crescent for several hours as they tried to facilitate her rescue. This film is a tribute to the truth and highlights the unique role of cinema in amplifying the voices of those who reflect the pain and courage of the Palestinian people.

Accolades and Recognition

The film has received international recognition, with stars such as Brad Pitt, Joaquin Phoenix, Rooney Mara, Alfonso Cuaron, and Jonathan Glazer serving as executive producers. It has also been selected as Tunisia’s entry to the International Feature Award at the Oscars 2026. The film had its international premiere in Toronto, just four days after its start in Venice, and will play in several other festivals, including Busan, San Sebastian, Zurich, BFI London Film Festival, and Chicago.

The Doha Film Festival Program

The full program for the Doha Film Festival will be unveiled in the coming weeks. However, with "The Voice of the Hind Rajab" as its opening film, the festival is set to be a powerful and emotional experience. The film’s director, Kaouther Ben Hania, has received a standing ovation for her work, and the film is expected to have a significant impact on audiences.

The Significance of the Film

According to Fatma Hassan Alremaihi, director and CEO of the Doha Film Institute (DFI), "The Voice of the Hind Rajab" is a film that honors the truth and reflects the pain and courage of the Palestinian people. The film demonstrates the unique role of cinema in amplifying the voices of those who have been affected by conflict and highlights the extraordinary efforts of aid workers and innocent people who risk their lives to save others. The film’s message is one of hope and resilience, and it is expected to resonate with audiences around the world.
