Job Cuts at Sky

Sky has announced plans to reduce its workforce in Great Britain by 600 jobs. The company, which employs over 20,000 people in the UK, is looking to focus on its streaming services.

Reasons for the Cuts

The media organization has started consulting on proposed changes that will affect around 900 roles. However, it is expected that 600 positions will be cut. About two-thirds of the jobs to go will be in Leeds, London, and Livingston, West Lothian.

Previous Cuts

This is not the first time Sky has made significant job cuts. Since 2023, the company has reduced its workforce by almost 3,000 roles, including engineers who install satellite dishes. At the beginning of this year, it announced the closure of three call centers, resulting in the loss of 2,000 jobs.

Focus on Digital Services

Sky is shifting its focus towards improving its digital and TV services, rather than creating new platforms. The company has launched several new products in recent years, including Sky Glass, Sky Stream, and a fiber broadband service.

Impact on Employees

The cuts are not intended as a cost-cutting exercise, and individual performance will not be a factor. Employees affected by the cuts may be able to take on other roles within the business.

Future Plans

A spokesman for the broadcaster said that the company is looking to the future and changing its approach to offer customers the next generation of experiences. This will involve investing in digital-first services, unbeatable content, and better product performance, powered by global innovation.
