Introduction to Mark Ronson

Mark Ronson is one of the most successful producers in the UK, known for his work with artists such as Amy Winehouse, Lady Gaga, and Bruno Mars. However, before his success as a producer, Ronson was a popular DJ in New York, playing for everyone from Jay-Z to Mariah Carey.

Early Life and Career

Ronson was born in London to a family of musicians and music industry professionals. His mother, Ann Dexter-Jones, was a musician, and his father, Laurence Ronson, was a music publisher. Ronson’s early life was marked by instability, with his parents’ marriage ending in divorce. He found solace in music, particularly in the club scene of 1990s New York.

The New York Club Scene

In the 1990s, Ronson was a regular DJ at clubs such as the VIP Bar, Spy, where he played alongside other notable DJs of the time. He remembers the era fondly, citing the creativity and energy of the scene. "It was probably the last time that New York was both creative and commercially at the top of hip-hop," he says. "A tribe called Quest, Wu-Tang, Biggie Smalls, Lil’ Kim, Busta Rhymes… and they were all in the clubs every night."

Working with Big Names

Ronson’s big break came when he was hired by P Diddy (then known as Sean Combs) to play at A-List events, including his 29th birthday party. Ronson also worked with Mariah Carey, who had specific requests for songs she wanted to hear. "There was a great R&B record called Say You’re My Number One by Princess, which she would always request," he recalls.

Memoirs and Reflections

Ronson has written a memoir that focuses on his early days as a DJ in New York. The book is a love letter to the era, with Ronson reminiscing about the music, the people, and the experiences that shaped him. He also reflects on his relationships with his parents and how they influenced his career. "My parents had crazy parties all the time," he says. "Fifty or 60 slightly cracked people, smoking, drinking, having a great time."

Producing Hits

As a producer, Ronson has worked with some of the biggest names in music. He won an Oscar for his work on Lady Gaga’s song "Shallow" and has produced hits for Amy Winehouse, Bruno Mars, and Dua Lipa. Ronson’s approach to production is centered around creating a comfortable and relaxed environment for the artist. "My role is just to rule out the outside world and let the artist feel relaxed and comfortable at all times," he says.

Lessons Learned

Ronson’s experiences, both positive and negative, have taught him valuable lessons about the music industry and about himself. He has learned to navigate delicate situations and to prioritize the artist’s needs. "If you have a problem, I wish you would only say it to my bumper," he jokes. Ronson’s story is one of perseverance, creativity, and a passion for music. From his early days as a DJ in New York to his current status as a successful producer, Ronson has always been driven by his love of music.
