Introduction to David Threlfall’s Return to the Stage

The actor David Threlfall, best known for his role as Frank Gallagher in Channel 4’s Shameless, is set to return to the stage in his hometown of Manchester. Threlfall will be taking on the iconic role of King Lear at the Royal Exchange Theater in 2026, as part of the theater’s 50th-anniversary celebrations.

Threlfall’s History with the Royal Exchange

Threlfall has a long history with the Royal Exchange, having appeared in seven shows at the theater in the 1980s and 1990s. He played roles such as Macbeth and Uncle Vanya, and was a regular at the venue during that time. Threlfall’s return to the stage will be his first performance at the Royal Exchange since 1999.

The 50th-Anniversary Season

The Royal Exchange’s 50th-anniversary season will also feature a number of other notable productions, including the premiere of Rory Mullarkey’s new play, which explores three periods in the history of Manchester. The season will also include a production of Jim Cartwright’s play, Road, which will feature Johnny Vegas, Lucy Beaumont, and Shobna Gulati. Another former Royal Exchange regular, Sir Tom Courtenay, will also return to the theater in a pre-recorded segment.

Threlfall’s Career

Threlfall has had a long and distinguished career, with numerous awards and nominations to his name. He won an Olivier Award in 1980 and has been nominated for two Tony Awards on Broadway. Threlfall has also appeared in a number of other notable roles, including the TV series What Overle, Code of a Killer, and Nightsleader.

The Royal Exchange Theater

The Royal Exchange Theater has been a staple of Manchester’s cultural scene since 1976. The theater is located in a historic building and has a unique, in-the-round stage. The Royal Exchange has a reputation for producing high-quality, innovative theater and has played host to a number of notable productions over the years.

Challenges and Renewal

The Royal Exchange has faced some challenges in recent years, including the impact of the pandemic and a series of controversies. However, the theater is hoping to regain its former glory with its 50th-anniversary season. The artistic director, Selina Cartmell, has stated that the season will "renew our commitment to first-class theater here in the heart of Manchester and as an artistic engine room for talent development in the north".

Upcoming Productions

The Royal Exchange’s 50th-anniversary season will feature a number of exciting productions, including the premiere of Tolu Okanlawon’s play, Shooters, which tells the story of African-American photojournalist Gordon Parks. The season will also include revivals of Noel Coward’s Private Lives and Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music. With its diverse range of productions, the Royal Exchange is set to cement its place as one of the leading theaters in the UK.
