Introduction to James Mcardle

James Mcardle is a 36-year-old actor from Glasgow who has made a name for himself in the entertainment industry. With a background in theater, he has also gained recognition for his roles in television shows such as "Sexy Beast" and "Mare of Easttown." Mcardle’s recent success can be attributed to his versatility in playing various characters, from theater productions like "Angel in America" and "Macbeth" to television dramas.

Mcardle’s Theater Roots

Mcardle is currently returning to his theater roots with a production of "Bacchae," a ancient Greek tragedy. He plays the role of King Pentheus, a character he describes as "a dictatorial figure, a poisonous guide who is unfortunately all too recognizable." The production is a unique blend of theater and music, with a runtime of 145 minutes, significantly shorter than some of his previous theater productions.

The Challenges of Playing Epic Roles

Mcardle has played several epic roles throughout his career, including a three-and-a-half-hour production of "Macbeth" and a two-part, eight-hour production of "Angel in America." He recalls the intensity of playing these long roles, saying, "I remember not being able to sleep towards the end of ‘Macbeth.’ In other cases, I’d wake up and every bone in my body would hurt." Despite the challenges, Mcardle enjoys the physicality of playing these roles, saying, "If you’re really going to get confused, it should have something physical about it."

From Theater to Television

Mcardle’s transition from theater to television has been successful, with roles in shows like "Mare of Easttown" and "Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens." He notes that there is ego in both theater and television, but he doesn’t see a big difference between the two. Mcardle is happy to have the option to work in theater, as it allows him to be seen in a new light.

A-List Casting and the Theater Industry

Mcardle comments on the topic of A-list casting, saying that it’s not a new phenomenon and that it’s a commercial business. He believes that the only problem arises when a famous person is cast in a role they’re not suited for. Mcardle also notes that he’s been fortunate to have worked with several well-known actors, including Kate Winslet, Saoirse Ronan, and Jack Lowden.

Mcardle’s Background and Upbringing

Mcardle grew up in Glasgow, the only child of a mother and father who were supportive of his decision to pursue a career in the arts. His grandmother, however, was a significant influence on his cultural upbringing, exposing him to high-brow culture and theater. Mcardle recalls that culture was more accessible in the past, with people attending theater productions as they would a football game.

Mcardle’s Career and Future Projects

Throughout his career, Mcardle has worked with several repeat co-stars, including Kate Winslet and Jack Lowden. He enjoys forming partnerships with actors and exploring new projects together. Mcardle’s current production, "Bacchae," runs until November 1, 2025, at the National Theater. With his versatility and range, Mcardle is sure to continue making a name for himself in the entertainment industry.
