Jack White Sells Part of His Music Catalog to Sony Music

Jack White, the renowned musician and founder of the White Stripes, has sold a portion of his music catalog to Sony Music, according to a source familiar with the matter. The exact details of the deal, including the amount sold and the price paid by Sony, have not been disclosed.

Background on the Deal

The deal, which was finalized earlier this summer, includes rights to White’s recordings from throughout his career, spanning his work with the White Stripes, his solo career, and his projects with the Raconteurs and the Dead Weather. White has maintained a long-standing relationship with Sony, having signed with the company’s flagship label, Columbia, in 2012 for a solo record contract in collaboration with his own label, Third Man Records.

White’s History and Music Career

White has been a trendsetter in the music industry for many years, known for his innovative and eclectic style. As the frontman of the White Stripes, he rose to fame in the early 2000s with a unique blend of blues rock and visual aesthetics, characterized by the band’s distinctive red, white, and black color scheme. The White Stripes released six albums, including the critically acclaimed "White Blood Cells" and "Elephant," and won six Grammy Awards between 2004 and 2011. The band is set to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in November.

Other Successful Projects

In addition to his work with the White Stripes, White has also found success with his other projects. With the Raconteurs, he had hits with tracks like "Steady, As She Goes" and "Salute Your Solution," and their albums "Consolers of the Lonely" and "Broken Boy Soldiers" were both nominated for Grammy Awards. The Dead Weather, another one of White’s bands, has had all three of their albums debut in the top 10 of the Billboard charts. White’s solo career has also been highly successful, with his first three solo albums reaching number one on the charts.

Recent Music and Activities

Last year, White released his sixth solo album, "No Name," which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Album. He has also been making headlines recently for his criticism of former President Donald Trump, with whom he has been engaged in a public feud. White has been vocal about his concerns regarding Trump’s policies and actions, and has used his platform to speak out against what he sees as a threat to America and the world.

Sony Music’s Recent Acquisitions

The deal with White is not the first time Sony Music has acquired the catalog of a legendary rock act. In 2021, the company purchased Bruce Springsteen’s recording and publishing catalogs for around $500 million, and in 2022, it acquired Bob Dylan’s recorded music catalog. Earlier this year, Sony Music bought the catalog of the hip-hop group Hypnosis. These acquisitions demonstrate the company’s commitment to expanding its portfolio of iconic music catalogs and investing in the legacy of legendary artists like Jack White.
