Introduction to Canal+ and UGC

The Global Media Powerhouse Canal+ announced on Tuesday, September 2, that it had completed exclusive negotiations to acquire a 34% share in the French cinema group UGC. This deal would expand Canal+’s range with a significant move into theater exhibition.

About the Deal

If the acquisition of the minorities is completed, Canal+ would have the option for full control of UGC from 2028. UGC is a leading French cinema and audiovisual production group with one of the most robust cinema chains in France, including 55 cinemas (48 in France and seven in Belgium) and millions of admissions per year.

UGC’s Highlights

UGC has several multiplexes in large cities, including Paris’ UGC Ciné Cité Les Halles, the most visited cinema in the world. Its content includes successful franchise films such as "Serial (bad) weddings", global hits like "Amélie", and series like "HPI – high potential" and "Soleil noir – under a dark sun".

About Canal+

Canal+ is listed on the London stock exchange and has 27 million subscribers in 52 countries. The film and TV studio StudiCanal produces and distributes around 200 films worldwide and houses global IP such as "Paddington" and "Bridget Jones".

Statement from Canal+ CEO

Canal+ CEO Maxime Saada stated, "The growth of StudiCanal, led by Anna Marsh, is a priority for the Canal+ group, and the combination of our business with UGC would enable us to accelerate this development. This transaction demonstrates the group’s commitment to cinema and theater exhibition, which play a crucial role in the presentation and enhancement of the value of films."
