Introduction to OCA

Argentina’s film company has acquired worldwide rights to the Mexican filmmaker Karla Badillo’s OCA before its world premiere in TIFF’s Discovery section. OCA is a Mexican-Argentine co-production from Pina Films, Las Jaras, Pucará Cine, and Year Zero.

The Plot of OCA

The film centers on Rafaela, a committed young nun from a dwindling community who begins a pilgrimage to a distant city where a new archbishop has been appointed. Along the way, Rafaela meets various travelers, including a paratrooper and members of the privileged class. Their encounters and perspectives reflect their own search for faith, meaning, and survival in a world characterized by spiritual devotion and material realities.

The Cast of OCA

The film features Natalia Solián from Hueera: The Bone Woman and Cecilia Suárez from The House of Flowers, alongside Leonardo Ortizgris, Gerardo Trejo-Luna, Raúl Briones, and Enrique Arreola. The film was produced by María José Córdova, Federico Eibozyc, Karla Badillo, and Federico Sande Novo.

Acquisition and Production

Paulina Portela, CEO of the film company, negotiated the deal with María José Córdova from Pina Films, describing OCA as "a rich, unique vision that combines poetry and existential studies in a way that we rarely see in contemporary cinema." Córdova added that partnering with the film company for OCA‘s international journey opens the door to a path they have dreamed of for a long time: a partner who understands the value of auteur cinema and knows how to combine it with audience appeal, striving for emotions, risks, and beauty.

The Film Company’s Highlights

The film company’s highlights include Romina Paula and Rosario Cervio’s docudrama Again Again, which debuted in Rotterdam in 2019 and played at San Sebastian, as well as the Mafi Collective’s documentary Oasis, selected for the 2024 Berlin Forum.
