Introduction to Air Guitar Championships
The World Air Guitar Championships, held in Oulu, Finland, is an event where participants showcase their air guitar skills, competing against each other to be crowned the best. This year’s event, which took place from 20 to 22 August, saw a candidate from Great Britain, Piers Burnell, participate with high hopes.
The British Candidate’s Performance
Piers Burnell, who resides in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, represented Great Britain at the 29th annual World Air Guitar Championships. He performed three James Bond songs, adopting the stage name "James Bond Double Air Seven" for this year’s competition. Unfortunately, Burnell was eliminated in the qualification round, narrowly missing the cut by a mere 0.7 points.
Reaction to Elimination
Despite the disappointing outcome, Burnell expressed his enthusiasm for the event and his determination to return stronger next year. He noted that the championship’s goal system can be very competitive, with the winner and the seventh-place contestant often being separated by just a fraction of a point. Burnell’s passion for air guitar is undeniable, and he is eager to spread the official motto of the Air Guitar World Championships: "air, not war."
Looking Forward to the 30th Anniversary
Burnell is already looking forward to the 30th anniversary edition of the festival, which promises to be even more significant as Oulu will be named the European Capital of Culture for 2026. He anticipates that the event will be "massive and much more difficult" due to its milestone anniversary and the city’s newfound status. Nonetheless, Burnell is undeterred and excited about the prospect of competing again and showcasing his air guitar skills to a broader audience.
