Introduction to Eurovision

The Austrian capital was last the host of the ESC extravagance in 2015 and 1967. Vienna defeated the Alpine City of Innsbruck to host the European song competition 2026. This decision was announced by the Austrian public broadcaster on Wednesday. Austria won the rights to organize the 70th edition of the event after the country’s singer, JJ, won with his song "Wasted Love" in May 2025.

The Event Location

The event location for the final is the Vienna City Hall, the largest indoor arena in the city. Since the first ESC in Lugano, Switzerland, in 1955, Eurovision has been one of the most famous pop music festivals in the world. It contributed to starting the careers of internationally famous acts such as ABBA, Celine Dion, and Olivia Newton-John.

Extravagant Celebration of All Things Pop

Known for its extravagant costumes, the event received 166 million living spectators last year in Basel, Switzerland. The winners will be decided based on who has the most points after a combination of the public and experienced judges’ votes.

History and Controversy

The event has also founded controversy in the past, for example, about political news or the decision to invite some countries that are not in Europe. The last winner of Austria came before JJ in 2014, when Drag Queen Conchita Wurst delighted the crowd, which led to homophobic opposition. JJ’s song "Wasted Love" mixed techno strikes with opera singing, a unique sound that captivated audiences. The European song competition has been a platform for artists to showcase their talents and has been a significant part of the music industry for decades.
