Introduction to Instagram’s New Location-Sharing Feature

A new function on Instagram, which allows users to share their physical location in the app, has raised concerns among data protection experts regarding the amount of exposed data and potential security risks for users. The feature was introduced as part of an app update, aiming to make it easier for users and their friends to stay in touch with the content they enjoy on Instagram.

How the Feature Works

According to Instagram’s blog, users can choose to share parts of their last active location with selected friends and can switch it off at any time. The feature also allows users to view content posted by friends and favorite creators from specific locations. Instagram emphasized that the feature is not automatically active and requires users to opt-in to share their whereabouts with others.

Default Settings and User Control

Meta, the parent company of Instagram, stated that the Instagram Maps feature is switched off by default, and users’ live locations are never shared unless they choose to do so. Users can also choose not to share their locations in certain areas or with specific people. However, data protection experts warn that social media users may not always be aware of how much information they share with an app or other users, even with the option to limit who sees what.

Expert Concerns and Potential Risks

Douglas Zytko, an app security expert, expressed concerns that the average user may not be aware of their data protection settings and how to manage them according to their preferences. He also mentioned that the introduction of location-sharing features on social media assumes that users know how to opt-in and out, but this may not always be the case. Additionally, Robbie Torney, Senior Director of AI programs at Common Sense Media, warned that location-sharing features can be particularly risky for younger app users, exposing them to unnecessary risks and social pressure.

User Confusion and Potential Misuse

Some Instagram users reported that their locations were being recorded on the map by friends by default, despite the feature being switched off by default. Instagram’s Head, Adam Moseri, responded to these concerns, stating that the company is re-examining the feature’s functionality to ensure that users are not sharing their locations without explicit consent. However, experts warn that social media users may still be confused about how to manage their data protection settings, leading to potential misuse and security risks.

Managing Data Protection Settings

Data protection experts emphasize the importance of managing data protection settings to control who sees what content. However, this can be complicated, especially when sharing different types of content with various groups of people. The concept of "context collapse" refers to the difficulty of managing the visibility of content across different social media platforms and audiences. As such, users must be cautious when sharing their locations and other personal information on social media.

Conclusion

The introduction of Instagram’s location-sharing feature has raised concerns among data protection experts regarding the potential risks and security threats associated with sharing personal information on social media. While the feature is designed to make it easier for users to connect with each other, it is crucial for users to be aware of their data protection settings and to manage them carefully to avoid potential misuse and security risks.
