Introduction to Sony’s Mobile Business

The bosses of a huge technical brand, Sony, have expressed fear that the telephone business could come to an end. Sony has a long history of pioneering work, from television to game consoles and 33 years of cell phones.

History of Sony’s Cell Phone Business

Sony’s cell phones were once one of the must-have brands, with a market share of 9 percent during its peak as Sony Ericsson. However, today it is believed that the mobile market share of Sony is only about 1 percent in some countries. The company has been overshadowed by the popularity of iPhone and Samsung, as well as cheaper new competitors.

Current State of Sony’s Mobile Business

The buyers became suspicious after they found that all Sony telephones were sold out in a mysterious way last month. And they stay that way today, although the chiefs now insist that they don’t give up. Lin Tao, Chief Financial Officer from Sony, said that his Xperia brand is still "an extremely important business for us". However, she also suggested that the department could go in a different direction and said that "communication technology is used in other areas as smartphones".

Challenges Facing Sony’s Mobile Business

Big names that were huge in the early 2000s were put in the shade by the popularity of iPhone and Samsung, as well as cheaper new competitors. LG withdrew from the smartphone industry in 2021 and issued the final software update to existing mobile phone owners only a few weeks ago. Paolo Pescatore, an analyst, recently said that it seems that the company is canceling the mobile business in view of the continuing challenges in the handset business and the changing market dynamics by some markets.

Future of Sony’s Mobile Business

A Sony spokesman previously told that the retreat from the mobile business is currently not being considered. However, the company under Sony still seems to be committed to smartphones under its premium brand that resonates in other markets. The company is changing towards a slimmer and agile business model, and it continues to go forward with difficult decisions whether the pulling of the plug should be made.

Market Share of Popular Mobile Brands

The most popular mobile brands have been unveiled, with Samsung having a market share of 20.1 percent, Apple having 19.5 percent, Xiaomi having 13.9 percent, OPPO having 7.8 percent, and Vivo having 7.5 percent. Other brands make up 31.2 percent of the market share. This is based on global shipments in the first quarter of 2025, according to IDC.
