The Olympic Future of Fencing Endangered

The most successful Olympian of Ukraine, Olga Kharlan, has warned that the Olympic future of fencing could be endangered if the management committee of the sport continues its current path. Kharlan’s warning comes after the International Fencing Federation (FIE) announced plans to relax its neutrality rules, allowing Russian military athletes to participate in its events.

Background of the Issue

Kharlan expressed her anger and disappointment upon hearing the news, stating that it is a form of army propaganda. She emphasized that the Russian army, which these athletes represent, is responsible for penetrating Ukraine and killing people, including Ukrainian athletes. The FIE’s decision means that three Russian army officers, including Kharlan’s long-time Olympic rival Sofya Velikaya, can participate in the World Fencing Championships in the Georgian capital.

Impact on Ukrainian Athletes

Despite the decision, Kharlan stated that she and her countrywomen would not shy away from competing against Russian opponents. However, she expressed that seeing them in competitions is an injustice, and they will never shake hands or speak to them. Kharlan believes that the presence of Russian military athletes in competitions undermines the integrity of the sport.

Russian Influence on Fencing

Kharlan fears that her sport will be corrupted by Russian money and influence. The Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov was re-elected as President of the FIE for a fifth term, although he stepped down later due to international sanctions. Kharlan noted that the Russian influence on the FIE is increasing, which could lead to governance issues similar to those faced by the International Boxing Association, which lost its Olympic recognition.

Consequences for Fencing

The concern is that the FIE could go down the same path as the International Boxing Association, which would put the sport’s Olympic status at risk. Kharlan emphasized that with all the scandals and press surrounding fencing, the sport is close to being excluded from the Olympic Games. She questioned why fencing should be included in the Olympics if it causes such problems.

Call to Reverse the Decision

Kharlan is one of over 440 fencers from 40 countries who signed an open letter calling on the FIE to reverse its decision and resume thorough reviews of Russian and Belarusian athletes applying for neutral status. The letter expressed deep concern and disagreement with the FIE’s decision, stating that it does not provide sufficient protective measures to ensure the sport’s integrity and neutrality.

Ukrainian Athletes Forgotten

Kharlan believes that the battles of Ukraine are being forgotten by people in world sports. She expressed concern that most people are tired of the conflict and do not want to understand or sympathize with Ukraine. Kharlan emphasized that nothing has changed, and the situation is worsening, with more deaths and destruction. She hopes that people will not forget the struggles of Ukrainian athletes and the impact of the conflict on their lives.
