Introduction to CBI Succession Planning

The CBI has initiated a search for a new chairman to succeed Rupert Soames, as the organization continues its recovery from the crisis that brought it to the brink of collapse in 2023.

Background on the Crisis

Mr. Soames, the grandson of Sir Winston Churchill, was appointed by the CBI at the end of 2023, when the organization was facing bankruptcy due to a significant loss of members. The group had also been embroiled in a scandal involving sexual misconduct, which led to emergency financing from a group of banks and a freeze on meetings with government ministers.

Progress Under Rupert Soames

A prominent CBI member has described Mr. Soames as the "savior" of the group, stating that without his ability to bring back members, the organization would not exist today. Along with Rain Newton-Smith, the CBI managing director, Mr. Soames has partially restored the group’s influence in Whitehall, although its earlier status as "the voice of British business" may never be fully regained.

Search for a New Chairman

The next chairman, likely to be from a leading listed company, will take over from Mr. Soames at the beginning of next year. Egon Zehnder International has been appointed to handle the search for the CBI. According to a CBI spokesman, the search has been initiated to ensure continuity and a smooth transition, as the term of office of the CBI chair usually runs for two years and Mr. Soames will be ending his term in early 2026.
