Introduction to the Case

Sean "Diddy" Combs was convicted in a federal court in New York for a prostitution-related crime but was acquitted of the far more serious charges for racketeering and sex trade. After a seven-week legal proceeding, he was found guilty in two counts related to participating in prostitution.

Reaction to the Verdict

The hip-hop mogul raised his hands in prayer after the verdict was read, looked at the jury, and hugged one of his defenders. Combs’ lawyer requested that the judge grant him release on bail, arguing that he was acquitted of very serious charges and was convicted of a much less serious indictment.

Denial of Bail

The public prosecutor countered that Combs should remain in custody until sentencing. The US District Judge Arun Subramanian rejected the defense application, denying Combs bail. Combs faces up to 10 years in prison for each of the two prostitution counts. He has been held in Federal Lockup in Brooklyn since his arrest in September 2024.

Accusations Against Combs

During the trial in New York, prosecutors accused Combs of using his power and assets to operate a criminal enterprise that sexually exploited women over two decades. Two former associates, including one who testified under the pseudonym "Jane," told the court that he physically and sexually abused them. They described being forced to participate in drug-fueled, day-long sexual encounters with male sex workers in hotel rooms.

Defense Arguments

Combs vehemently contested all charges. His lawyers admitted that he had sometimes been abusive in his domestic relationships but argued that the women voluntarily participated in the sexual activities described by the prosecutors. They claimed that Combs’ "swinger" lifestyle did not involve anything illegal.

Reaction to the Judgment

The jury, consisting of eight men and four women, deliberated for approximately thirteen and a half hours over three days before delivering their verdict. Combs was convicted of flying people across the country for sexual encounters but was freed from the more serious charges that could have resulted in a life sentence. After the judge adjourned the court, Combs seemed overwhelmed, wiping his face and kneeling in prayer. He told his family, "I’ll be home soon," and "I love you, mom."
