The Dark Side of E-Cigarettes

E-cigarettes were originally marketed as a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes, but this perception has largely gone up in smoke. Studies have shown that most adults who try to quit smoking often end up using both, and teenagers who have never smoked are now getting hooked on nicotine.

The Rise of Vaping

Around 11 million Americans vape regularly, and although vapes are still considered less harmful than cigarettes because they do not burn tobacco, the source of tar and many carcinogens, increasing evidence shows that they are far from safe.

Toxic Metals in E-Cigarettes

A new study published in a scientific magazine has found that e-cigarettes release a shocking amount of toxic metals, with some producing as much lead in one day as almost 20 packs of traditional cigarettes. The study revealed that e-cigarettes contain dangerous neurotoxic lead and carcinogenic nickel and antimony, which emphasizes the need for urgency in enforcement.

Hidden Risks

The research found that these risks are not only worse than other e-cigarettes but in some cases worse than traditional cigarettes. The study was directed by a doctoral student who wanted to learn more about what his friend, a vaper, was inhaling into his body. When he tested a one-way vape pod in the laboratory, he was stunned by the results.

Disposable Vape Pods

The researchers took a closer look at seven types of disposable devices from three of the most popular brands. They found that these disposable devices are already contaminated with e-liquid toxins or are leaching them from their components into the e-liquids and ultimately into the vapor. Some of the devices contained nickel and antimony levels that could increase the risk of cancer, as well as lead and nickel emissions that could lead to brain and lung damage.

Call for Regulation

The researchers are calling for more research and regulation in relation to e-cigarettes, especially since the market is outpacing science. While some restrictions have been placed on the sale of flavored e-cigarettes or vapes, the ban is not being enforced, and new e-cigarette products are continuously being created. The study highlights the need for urgency in addressing the hidden risks of e-cigarettes and the importance of regulating the industry to protect public health.
