Introduction to New Opinion Editor

The Washington Post announced on Wednesday that it had a new opinion editor. The move takes place four months after it announced a "significant shift" to the opinion page and the departure of its competitive section.

Appointment of Adam O’Neal

Adam O’Neal, who is currently acting as a correspondent for The Economist in Washington, will take over as the highest opinion editor of the post. This includes an introductory video from O’Neal, where he expressed his vision for the section.

Philosophy and Vision

O’Neal stated, "We will also be a steadfast supporter of free markets and personal freedom. Our philosophy will be rooted in fundamental optimism about the future of this country." The section of the opinion will not dictate ideologies or call for certain opportunities about politics. The attitude corresponds to the vision that the owner of the post, Jeff Bezos, has articulated.

Bezos’ Vision and Employee Reaction

Bezos mentioned free markets and personal freedoms when describing the new mandate of the section, which garnered mixed reactions from employees. Some employees, including Marty Baron, the revered former executive editor of the post, expressed counter reactions, while some conservatives praised the move.

Pillars of the Opinion Section

Bezos stated that the section will write two pillars every day to support and defend personal freedom and free markets. He also mentioned that viewpoints opposing these pillars will be published by others. The new direction of the opinion section is expected to be a significant shift from its previous stance.

Departure of David Shipley

The departure of David Shipley, O’Neal’s predecessor, followed four months of increasing criticism from post employees and readers. Shipley’s decision not to publish a cartoon satirizing the relationship between Bezos and US President Donald Trump led to the resignation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist.

Interim Editor and Start Date

The deputy opinion editor, Mary Duenwald, has been serving as an interim section editor since Shipley’s departure. No start date was announced for O’Neal.

Relevance and Accessibility

In an email to CNN employees, Will Lewis, the managing director and editor of the post, stated that O’Neal recognizes the importance of making opinion reporting relevant, accessible, and consistent for readers who feel under-supplied. Lewis emphasized that O’Neal’s appointment is about combining the editorial voice with real concerns and discussions across America.

New Direction and Values

Lewis also campaigned for Bezos’ mandate for the section of opinion, stating that the new direction is not geared towards a political party but offers an opportunity for the opinion section to share the best American values. The move is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the section and align it with the values of the post.
