Overcoming Depression: A Footballer’s Journey

Linda Magull, the midfielder of Inter Milan, has spoken publicly about her struggles with severe depression. In a recent podcast, she revealed that she feels much better now and is happy, a year after reaching a low point in her depression.

The Lowest Point

Magull’s descent into depression was triggered by both sporty and personal reasons. She had become a key player in her international football career, winning silver with Germany at the 2022 Euros in England. However, she failed to make it to the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. At the same time, she was experiencing changes in her personal relationships, which tightened the situation. "I was totally confused and didn’t know what to do with myself," she said.

Career Highlights and Lows

Magull scored the only goal in Germany’s Euro 2022 final against England. However, her move to Inter Milan in January 2024 did not help her overcome her depression. In fact, it seemed to have made things worse. "I fled from Munich, but after a few weeks, I missed it terribly. I thought I had lost everything," she said. She started to experience panic attacks and sweats, and at one point, she thought, "What’s going on with me?"

Seeking Help

In the summer of 2024, Magull made the difficult decision to seek help in a private clinic. She spent six weeks there, rediscovering her passion for football and life in general. "I knew I had to do it because my thoughts were so out of control that I saw no sense in life," she said. She emphasized the importance of seeking treatment and therapy for depression, saying, "Depression simply took over my personality. They need treatment, they need therapy."

A New Chapter

In March 2025, Magull announced her retirement from the national team after 77 international games and 22 goals. She is now looking forward to another season at Inter, whose women have qualified for the Champions League for the first time in their history. Magull remains proud of the difficult decision she made to seek help and is excited about the new chapter in her life. "I want to concentrate even more on club football and have more time to pursue other things," she said.

A Message of Hope

Magull’s story is a testament to the importance of seeking help and support when struggling with mental health issues. She is proud of her decision to seek help and encourages others to do the same. "This is the thing I am most proud of, no matter what or how many titles I won. I am proud that I went to this private clinic, but especially how I went," she said. If you or someone you know is struggling with severe emotional stress or suicidal thoughts, please seek professional help.
