Recall of Adjustable Dumbbells
Bowflex is recalling millions of units of its adjustable dumbbells due to a safety hazard. The weight plates on the dumbbells can detach and strike users, causing injury.
Reason for Recall
The recall is taking place after over 100 reports of injuries, including head lacerations, abrasions, broken toes, and other impact-related hazards, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
Affected Products
The recalled dumbbells are popular due to their versatility, allowing users to lift different weights without needing a full set of individually weighted dumbbells. A total of 3,844,200 units of the product are being recalled, including 3.7 million units sold by Nautilus Inc., which changed its corporate name to Bowflex in 2023.
Refund and Replacement
Johnson Health Tech Trading, which acquired some of Bowflex’s assets, including the recalled dumbbell models, will reimburse customers for the purchase price of the dumbbells in the form of a voucher or replacement units. Customers who bought the Bowflex dumbbells can request a refund in the form of a prepaid voucher and are also entitled to receive a one-year membership for digital fitness.
Response to Recall
Johnson Health Tech Trading stated that the voluntary recall is in line with their mission to provide high-quality and safe fitness equipment. However, Consumer Reports, a non-profit organization, said that the company’s offer is not sufficient, and consumers should be able to get their money back in full without any conditions.
Details of Recalled Products
The recalled dumbbell sets, referred to as "Bowflex 552, 52.5-LB adjustable dumbbells" and "Bowflex 1090, 90 LB adjustable dumbbells," were sold in pairs and as individual units. The dumbbells have black weights with handles, weight plates, and a plastic tray. The 1090 dumbbells can be set to weigh between 10 and 90 pounds.
What to Do
The CPSC is urging owners of the recalled dumbbells to stop using them immediately and visit the recall website to request a refund. Consumers can fill out a claim form to receive a refund or replacement.
