Introduction to the New DC Universe
The fortress of loneliness gets a familiar voice. Michael Rosenbaum, best known to DC fans as the iconic Lex Luthor of Smallville, has confirmed that he will appear in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film, albeit in a smaller role. During a panel at the Fan Expo Dallas, hosted by ScreenRant’s Joseph Deckelmeier, Rosenbaum was asked if he would be involved in the new DC universe. He gave the fans exactly what they wanted to hear: "I don’t know. James asked me to have a little fun, so I have a few lines that I do. In a way, it’s funny… Anyway, there was nothing in this, but he is the head of DC, so I think he can put me in a film or something."
Michael Rosenbaum’s Involvement
Rosenbaum added that Gunn, one of his best friends, has poured his "heart and soul" into Superman and described the project as "exciting". The film marks the first live-action entry into the new DC universe, which Gunn is building from scratch as the co-head of DC Studios. Tom Welling, Rosenbaum’s former Smallville co-star and on-screen Clark Kent, was also present during the panel when the discussion arose. Reflecting on Rosenbaum’s track record with this type of material, he said: "I will say to your point, I’ve never seen anything go wrong when [Michael] is committed, it’s always better."
Cameos in Superman
Gunn has already cast Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor in the new film, which means Rosenbaum won’t be reprising his iconic role – unless a multiverse twist is in store. However, his latest comments indicate that he will be voicing one of the quirky robots that populate Superman’s Fortress of Solitude, alongside Alan Tudyk and Michael Rooker. Nevertheless, fans haven’t ruled out a future on-screen role, perhaps as Lionel Luthor, Lex’s father. The 17-year age difference between Hoult and Rosenbaum could make this difficult if flashbacks are not involved. Previously, Rosenbaum spoke to the idea and said: "If that would ever come to the table, I would definitely consider it."
