Introduction to Marco Sturm’s New Role

Marco Sturm has finally reached his goal since he retired as a player in 2013. The team he will be coaching is not just any team in the NHL, but the Bruins, an original six team and winner of six Stanley Cups, with the most recent win in 2011. These factors make the position particularly coveted, and the Bruins interviewed several candidates before choosing Sturm.

Preparation and Passion

"Marco impressed us with his preparation, clarity, and passion every step," said Bruins GM Don Sweeney. "His way – playing for several NHL teams, coaching internationally, and leading teams at both the AHL and NHL levels – has shaped a rounded coach who deserves this opportunity." Sturm expressed his honor at becoming the 30th head coach in the Bruins’ history, stating, "Boston has always held a special place in my heart, and I know how much this team means to the city and our fans."

A New Direction

With the Bruins, Sturm takes over a team looking to rebound after missing the playoffs for the first time since 2016. According to Sweeney, "We’re taking a new direction with Marco behind the bench, and we’re confident that his energy, standards, and commitment to a competitive, stubborn brand of hockey reflect exactly what the Bruins should be." A significant part of Sturm’s job will be to develop the talented young players the team has, particularly with nine or ten picks in the second round of the NHL entry draft.

Developing Young Talent

Sturm sees working with young players as one of his strengths, saying, "I love working with young players, and if you look at my CV, transitions are my strength." He referenced his experience with the German national team and his work as a coach for the Kings’ farm team in Ontario, where he spent the last three seasons as head coach in the development league.

A First for German Coaches

Sturm is not the first German to coach an NHL team, as Ralph Krueger, born in Canada, coached the Edmonton Oilers and the Buffalo Sabres. However, Sturm is the first coach born in Germany to learn the game in the country.

From Rookie to Solid NHL Career

Sturm spent his first two professional seasons as a player at Landshut, then with Germany’s top flight, the DEL, before joining the San Jose Sharks in 1997. He played 17 seasons and over 1,000 games in the NHL, including five years in Boston, before completing his career in the DEL in 2013.

German Renaissance

When Sturm took over the German men’s national team in 2015, they were in a slump, but he brought a fresh perspective, motivating players to wear the national jersey again. Under his leadership, Germany reached the quarterfinals of the World Cup in 2016 and won the silver medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics.

The Path to Head Coach

After his success with the German national team, Sturm joined the Los Angeles Kings as an assistant coach. However, he decided that being an assistant in the NHL was not enough to prepare him for his goal of becoming a head coach. He then accepted the head coach position with the Ontario Reign, where he had a successful tenure, leading the team to three winning seasons and a playoff appearance.

The Road Ahead

Sturm’s first task with the Bruins will be to bring the team back into the playoffs. With his experience, passion, and commitment to developing young talent, he is well-equipped to lead the team in the right direction.
