Acquisition of New Film
Janus Films has acquired the North American rights to the epic historical drama "Magellan", which made its debut at Cannes. The film is directed by LAV Diaz and features Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal as the title character, the Portuguese explorer.
The Film’s Plot
The 160-minute feature tells the story of Magellan’s courageous expedition to the legendary countries of the East in the 16th century. Bernal plays a despotic and temperamental Magellan who convinces the Spanish crown to finance his voyage, which ultimately triggers a decade of devastating European conquests in the Pacific. The film explores the crew’s struggles with hunger and mutiny as they journey to the islands of the Malay archipelago, where Magellan’s spirit undergoes a transformation driven by conquest and conversion.
Previous Acquisitions
Janus Films has previously picked up other notable titles, including "Resurrection" by Rome director Bi Gan and Hlynur Pálmason’s "The Love Remains", both of which premiered at the 2025 Cannes film festival.
