Exclusive Interview with Camille Cottin
Camille Cottin, the star of the popular French series "Call my agent!", has reunited with director Nathan Ambrosioni for his third film, "Out of love". This marks the second collaboration between Cottin and Ambrosioni, following their successful partnership in the 2022 film "Toni".
The Story Behind "Out of Love"
"Out of love" tells the story of a woman whose sister disappears, leaving behind two young children. The film explores the themes of motherhood, family, and the complexities of human relationships. Cottin plays the lead role of a successful career woman who is suddenly forced to take care of her sister’s children.
Working with Nathan Ambrosioni
Cottin praises Ambrosioni’s unique approach to filmmaking, saying, "He writes, directs, and edits everything himself. It’s all in his head. He’s really obsessed with cinema and has so many references and directors that he loves, which really enriches what he does." Ambrosioni has cited influences such as Hirokazu Kore-eda and Edward Yang in previous interviews.
A Glimpse into the Film’s Plot
The film follows Cottin’s character, Jeanne, as she navigates the challenges of caring for her sister’s children. As she delves deeper into the mystery of her sister’s disappearance, Jeanne discovers that the police are not investigating the case due to a French law that allows individuals to disappear without being pursued. This law, which is based on real-life legislation, states that everyone has the right to disappear without being tracked.
The Reality of Disappearance in France
According to Cottin, around 10,000 people disappear in France every year. She was drawn to the script because of its thought-provoking exploration of this phenomenon and its impact on those left behind. The film raises questions about the complexities of motherhood and the difficulties faced by those who are left to pick up the pieces when a loved one disappears.
Production and Cast
The film is produced by Nicolas Dumont and Hugo Sélignac from Chi-Fou-Mi Productions, with France 2 also on board as a co-producer. Cottin is joined by a talented cast, including Juliette Armanet as her sister and Monia Chocri as her sister’s on-off friend. The film also features child actors Mano Varvat and Nina Birman.
Working with Child Actors
Cottin has experience working with children on set and praises her young co-stars in "Out of love". She notes that working with children can be unpredictable, but also incredibly rewarding. "There’s always something very surprising when they cut very well because they don’t know where it comes from," she says.
Upcoming Projects
Cottin is currently filming "Just an illusion" with directors Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache. She will also appear in Pierre Schoeller’s "Rembrandt" and Tamara Stepanyan’s "Save the dead". Additionally, she has been cast as the villainous Madame Thénardier in Fred Cavayé’s adaptation of "Les Misérables", alongside Benjamin Lavernhe as Monsieur Thénardier.
A Possible Return to "Call My Agent!"
There are rumors that Cottin may reprise her role as Andréa Martel in a final episode of "Call My Agent!". While she can’t confirm anything just yet, she hints that there are "serious possibilities" that she will return to the series.
