Channel 4 Chairman Replacement

Introduction to the Replacement Process

A start-up founder who heads a government-supported initiative for women’s entrepreneurship is among the candidates to become the next chairman of Channel 4. Debbie Wosskow is believed to be one of the names on the list to replace Sir Ian Cheshire, who resigned at the beginning of the year.

Importance of the Role

The race for the broadcaster’s top spot has gained additional importance in recent weeks following Alex Mahon’s resignation. Ms. Mahon, a vocal opponent of the proposed privatization of Channel 4 by the previous government, is leaving to join Supsterstruct, a private equity firm.

Appointment Process

The appointment of a new chair is expected to take place by autumn, with the chosen candidate heading the search for Ms. Mahon’s successor. Dawn Airey, an experienced television executive, is currently acting as interim chair of Channel 4 but has reportedly ruled herself out of the role on a long-term basis.

Candidate Background

Ms. Wosskow is already on the board of Channel 4, having joined as a non-executive director in January last year. It is unclear whether any other non-executives at the broadcaster have thrown their hat into the ring to succeed Sir Ian. Ms. Wosskow currently heads the Women’s Investment Taskforce and founded the home exchange start-up Love Home Swap before selling it to Wyndham in 2017.

Appointment Procedure

The appointment of Channel 4’s directors is technically led by Ofcom, the media regulator, in consultation with the culture secretary. Channel 4 was contacted for a comment, while Ms. Wosskow declined to comment on the matter.
