Introduction to a Holiday Classic
A little more than seven months remain until Christmas, but Amazon is already in the holiday spirit with its annual preview of upcoming titles. One of the most exciting releases is the film Oh. What. Fun., starring Michelle Pfeiffer. The movie tells the story of Claire Clauster, a woman who takes Christmas magic to a whole new level every year. However, her adult children, grandchildren, and even her husband never recognize the Herculean task she undertakes for the holidays until she goes missing and sets off on her own festive adventure.
The Story Unfolds
The film’s teaser begins with Claire wondering, "Why does St. Nick get all the credit?" as she finishes wrapping gifts. This is just one of her many tasks as she prepares for Christmas, from cooking in the halls to baking fabulous frozen cookies and making sure everyone has a good time when they come home. As she puts on a brave front, she complains about all the constant calls of "Mom" and privately laments the lack of recognition for everything that mothers, from her to Ms. Claus, do to make the holidays work. But this Christmas, while everyone else is dealing with their own seasonal drama, she’s off on her own way to spread holiday cheer.
A Star-Studded Cast
Oh. What. Fun. is based on an Amazon original short story by Chandler Baker, which celebrates the revised holiday hosts with a focus on "family, freedom, and the unexpected magic of a Christmas strength that was not written off". While Claire is the focus, her family will also get plenty of screen time as they strive to find her and save their holiday. Joining Pfeiffer is a massively talented ensemble, including Felicity Jones, Chloë Grace Moretz, Denis Leary, Dominic Sessa, Danielle Brooks, Devery Jacobs, Havana Rose Liu, Maude Apatow, Jason Schwartzman, Eva Longoria, and Joan Chen.
Behind the Scenes
At the helm of the Christmas comedy is Michael Showalter, who is already a proven winner at Prime Video. Apart from penning Wet Hot American Summer and writing and directing The Big Sick, he has also found success as the director of the streaming service’s smash hit adaptation The Idea of You with Nicholas Galitzine and Anne Hathaway. He was tapped to take over the next big adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s It Ends with Us, reuniting him with Hathaway alongside Josh Hartnett and Dakota Johnson, set to premiere in 2026. For Oh. What. Fun., he wrote the script directly with Baker, ensuring the film captured the spirit of the author’s original story.
