Introduction to TrumpRx
President Trump’s new TrumpRx online platform is a key part of his plan to lower drug costs for consumers. Some surveys show that two-thirds of Americans cite high health care costs as their biggest financial concern.
What is TrumpRx?
The White House said Trumprx.gov gives consumers “direct access to dramatically lower prices” on dozens of commonly used medications. The site does not allow users to purchase medications directly, but rather redirects them to drug manufacturers’ websites where they can fill their prescriptions. TrumpRx notes that it only “displays discounted drug price offers” and does not sell drugs directly to consumers.
How TrumpRx Works
"It’s a portal where someone can see if they can find a cheaper price from a drug manufacturer directly to the consumer," according to an expert. To purchase a discounted drug, TrumpRx requires users to follow the instructions for each drug offer on the platform.
Who Can Use TrumpRx?
Anyone can use TrumpRx as long as they have a prescription. However, the platform currently does not accept insurance and is limited to patients purchasing medications out of pocket. Therefore, drug expenses through TrumpRx do not count toward a consumer’s deductible.
Benefits of TrumpRx
Cheaper, direct-to-consumer options could benefit uninsured Americans, people with high deductibles, and patients whose medications are not covered by their insurance. Consumers may also be able to find cheaper drug prices through their own health insurance. Exceptions could include GLP-1 weight loss drugs, where TrumpRx could result in savings.
Medications Offered on TrumpRx
Consumers can currently access 43 different medications via TrumpRx for a range of conditions. For example, users looking for fertility drugs can get an 83% discount on Gonal F, a drug that contains a follicle-stimulating hormone. The White House said it plans to sign deals with more drugmakers, expanding the list of discounted drugs available through TrumpRx.
