NHS Unable to Meet Demand for Autism and ADHD Diagnoses in Adults

The Health Secretary has admitted that the NHS cannot meet the demand for autism and ADHD diagnoses in adults. This admission comes after adult referrals were suspended in Oxfordshire since 2024. The Health Secretary described this as a national issue that "worried him greatly."

Understanding the Issue

When asked if the situation was an epidemic that the government could not cope with, the response was affirmative. The government is trying to understand what is driving the increase in demand. Questions have been raised about whether the increase is due to greater awareness and positive awareness, leading people who would have been left unsupported and undiagnosed to seek help.

Meeting Demand and Independent Review

The NHS is lacking in meeting the demand for these services. To address this, the government is looking at the issue at a national level. An independent review has been initiated to examine whether there is evidence of overdiagnosis and to identify gaps in support. The review will also consider the increase in demand for mental health, ADHD, and autism services in England.

Current Challenges

Last year saw a significant increase in demand for these services, resulting in long waits for therapy in many areas. In February 2024, Oxford Health paused all new referrals due to an "unprecedented number" of adults being referred to its ADHD service. Similarly, Kingswood, which provides autism assessments and diagnoses, made the same decision in November 2024, citing a moral obligation to manage the backlog of referrals.

Future Plans

The government has stated that it is investing in expanding services. Oxford Health is working with the Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire West Integrated Care Board to design a service for the Thames Valley. Kingswood hopes that additional funding will be provided in the future to offer more diagnoses to the people of Oxfordshire. Despite these efforts, the current situation remains challenging, with many individuals facing long waits for essential diagnoses and support.
