Valentino Garavani: A Legendary Fashion Designer

Rome is currently paying its last respects to legendary designer Valentino Garavani, whose highly glamorous dresses and signature shade of red became a symbol of Italian elegance. The fashion titan, who died on Monday at the age of 93 at his residence in Rome, will be laid in state on Wednesday and Thursday at his foundation in Piazza Mignanelli, just a few meters from the famous Spanish Steps.

Funeral Arrangements

His funeral is scheduled for Friday at the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri in central Rome. The jet-setting Italian designer, commonly known by his first name, was adored by generations of royals, first ladies and movie stars, including Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Julia Roberts and Queen Rania of Jordan, all of whom testified that he always made them "look their best and feel their best."

A Legacy of Fashion Excellence

Hundreds of fashion greats, public figures and citizens are expected to attend the public viewing to honor the “last emperor” of Italian fashion. Rome Mayor praised him as "one of Italy’s brightest and most popular personalities," underscoring the designer’s deep ties to the capital, where he kept his studio although he often unveiled collections in Paris.

Career Highlights

Valentino’s illustrious career spanned almost half a century, from his beginnings in Rome in the 1960s to his retirement in 2008. He founded the House of Valentino in Rome’s central Via Condotti in 1959. His fail-safe designs cemented his status as king of the red carpet and made him the first choice for A-listers at award shows.

Red Carpet Success

His magnificent creations have won awards at countless Academy Awards, most notably in 2001, when Julia Roberts wore a vintage black-and-white dress to accept her Oscar for Best Actress, and in 2005, when Cate Blanchett chose a one-shoulder, butter-yellow silk dress for her Best Supporting Actress award. The current creative director of fashion house Valentino recently shared that he continues to feel Valentino’s "eye" as he prepares the next collection, set to be presented in Rome on March 12, a departure from the brand’s usual Paris venue.
