JP Morgan Chase Expands Retail Retirement Planning Services
Introduction to the Acquisition
JP Morgan Chase, a US-based banking giant, has decided to buy a British retirement technology company as it seeks to expand its retail retirement planning services. The company has agreed to buy WealthOS, which was founded in 2019.
About WealthOS
WealthOS is a wealth management software company chaired by former Google executive John Herlihy. The deal was announced internally this week by JP Morgan Chase’s private investment arm Nutmeg. The price paid by the American bank was unclear.
Workforce and Operations
WealthOS’ workforce is split between the UK and Sri Lanka, where the company has a product and software development center. This acquisition is expected to enhance JP Morgan’s capabilities in the UK private banking and wealth management sector.
JP Morgan’s Expansion in the UK
JP Morgan has made great strides in the UK private banking and wealth management sector in recent years. In 2021, the company launched a digital savings bank under the Chase brand. In the same year, JP Morgan acquired Nutmeg, for which it reportedly paid around £700 million. Nutmeg has about 275,000 customers in the UK.
Benefits of the Acquisition
According to an internal memo announcing the deal, JP Morgan said the company would gain "access to cutting-edge technology and deep industry expertise" through the acquisition of WealthOS. The acquisition is expected to further strengthen JP Morgan’s position in the UK retail retirement planning services market.
