Introduction to the Event
Jamie Dimon, the boss of JP Morgan Chase, and Rachel Reeves, the chancellor, will co-host an event at the World Economic Forum next week. This event comes two months after JP Morgan announced plans to open a massive new office in London, as part of a budget that exempts the banking sector from tax rises.
The Event Details
Mr. Dimon has agreed to introduce the chancellor at a roundtable meeting, which will be attended by the heads of some of the world’s largest multinational companies. The meeting is part of the Chancellor’s efforts to launch a renewed push to promote Britain as an investment destination around the world. The invitation issued by Mr. Dimon’s office refers to "a unique opportunity to engage with a key policymaker on the UK’s current economic landscape, growth and investment plans and policy reforms".
Background on JP Morgan’s Plans
The JP Morgan chairman and CEO, widely regarded as the world’s most influential banking boss, praised Ms. Reeves’ focus on financial discipline following November’s budget. He stated that "Ms Reeves’ focus on financial discipline is something the market should welcome, as is encouraging retail participation in the UK’s capital markets." The day after the Budget was published, JP Morgan confirmed plans to build a new headquarters in London’s Canary Wharf that could house 12,000 of the bank’s employees.
The Budget and Banking Sector
In the weeks leading up to the Chancellor’s financial statement, there was speculation about significant additional levies on the banking sector, with JP Morgan potentially among the institutions that would have been negatively affected. However, the Treasury ultimately decided against increasing existing taxes on the sector.
Upcoming Events
Ms. Reeves’ New Year’s charm offensive with business leaders begins on Tuesday, when she hosts a reception outside Davos to lay out her economic priorities for 2026. JP Morgan and the Treasury Department declined to comment on the event.
