The Real Reason Behind the US Military Pressure on Venezuela

The United States has been increasing its military presence in the Caribbean, with President Donald Trump citing Venezuela’s involvement in the production and smuggling of illegal drugs into America as the main reason. However, it is possible that there is more to this story than meets the eye. Could it be that the US is actually interested in Venezuela’s oil?

The Chemistry of Oil

Crude oil is a complex organic compound that differs in composition depending on the conditions under which it was formed. As a result, crude oil can be categorized into different types, including light, medium, and heavy. The type of oil that a refinery is designed to process is crucial, as overhauling a refinery to handle a different type of oil can be extremely costly.

The US Refinery Conundrum

Most American refineries are designed to process heavy, sticky crude oil. This is a problem because the shale revolution in the US has led to an increase in the production of light crude oil, which is not compatible with most American refineries. As a result, the US is forced to import heavy oil from other countries to meet the needs of its refineries.

The Importance of Venezuelan Oil

Venezuela has the largest heavy oil reserves in the world, alongside Canada and Russia. The US currently imports most of its oil from Canada, but if it were to seek alternative sources, Venezuela would be an attractive option. The US refineries in Texas and Louisiana are particularly dependent on heavy oil, and Venezuela’s reserves could help meet this demand.

The Reality of US Oil Imports

Despite being the largest oil producer in the world, the US still imports over 6,000 barrels of oil per day to supply its refineries. Most of the oil produced in the US is actually exported overseas, while the country relies on imports to meet its own needs. This highlights the complexity of the global oil market and the interconnectedness of oil production and trade.

Conclusion

While the US may cite drug smuggling as the reason for its military pressure on Venezuela, it is possible that the country’s oil reserves are a more significant factor. The US reliance on heavy oil and its inability to produce enough of it domestically make Venezuela’s reserves an attractive option. As the global oil market continues to evolve, the relationship between the US and Venezuela will be worth watching.
