Rise in HIV Cases Among Heterosexual Women
Women aged between 50 and 60 have been urged to practice safe sex after a rise in new HIV cases in heterosexual groups. As World AIDS Day is marked, activists say women in this age group may be at higher risk of contracting the virus because some do not use condoms.
Increasing Risk and Misconceptions
A recent report described the rise in the number of heterosexual women of all ages contracting the disease as “alarming”. The report also stated that in 2024 compared to 2019, new diagnoses were 26% higher among women exposed through sex with men. Perimenopausal or menopausal women are another at-risk group because they "believe they can’t get pregnant" and have unprotected sex.
Recommendations for Awareness and Testing
The committee recommended “expanding the opt-out testing program” in settings such as women’s health centers, as well as “locally led campaigns” targeting vulnerable groups. These groups include black African and Asian communities. Activists are urging women to think about sexually transmitted diseases and infections, including HIV, and to use condoms.
Living with HIV
HIV treatments mean people infected with the virus can lead healthy, normal lives. Drugs suppress the virus and prevent it from being passed on. However, the stigma surrounding the disease persists, with misconceptions about transmission, such as the belief that HIV can be transmitted by sharing cutlery or a toilet seat. In reality, transmission usually occurs through unprotected sexual intercourse.
Raising Awareness and Combating Stigma
To combat stigma and raise awareness, activists are using social media to share information and personal stories. One activist posted on social media to counter misinformation about the virus and was happily surprised by the positive response. People were learning, asking questions, and showing support, indicating a shift towards greater understanding and acceptance.
