NHS Doctor Suspended for 15 Months
Background
An NHS doctor has been suspended for 15 months by a medical tribunal after allegedly posting anti-Semitic comments on social media. The doctor, a 31-year-old trainee trauma and orthopedic surgeon, was also reported to have expressed support for "violent actions and terrorist organizations."
Investigation
The Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) stated that the doctor denies making racist or hateful speeches. The General Medical Council (GMC), an independent body that regulates doctors, medical staff, and anesthesia staff to ensure patient safety, began investigating after complaints that the doctor had made anti-Semitic or offensive comments on posts that also appeared to support terrorism.
Court Hearing
The court heard that the doctor’s alleged contributions were the subject of a suitability review by the GMC. Her lawyer told the court there was "no evidence" that her activities had "any impact on patient safety or her ability to carry out her duties as a doctor". The suspension comes into force and will be reviewed within six months.
Tribunal Decision
The hearing, which took place in Manchester, was an Interim Orders Tribunal (IOT) which decided whether the doctor’s activities should be restricted during the GMC’s investigation. The tribunal’s decision said it "found that there is no information to suggest that complaints were made by patients or that patients were harmed."
Previous Ruling
A previous IOT in September stated that no restrictions should be placed on the doctor. However, on October 3, it was decided to review the case again after the GMC reported an escalation.
Response to the Decision
In response to the tribunal’s decision, it was stated that "this is not an end. It is the beginning of a much larger battle for the integrity of our institutions." The GMC’s social media guidance states that healthcare professionals have the right to "freedom of belief, privacy and expression" but that the use of social media "must be balanced against the potential impact on the rights and interests of other people".
