Introduction to Amazon Refunds

Amazon has begun making payments to eligible Prime members as part of a $2.5 billion settlement over federal allegations that it misled customers. The online retailer agreed to the payouts in September to settle a Federal Trade Commission suit from 2023. The suit accused Amazon of tricking customers into signing up for Prime and making it difficult for them to cancel their membership.

Settlement Details

As part of the settlement, Amazon agreed to offer $1.5 billion in refunds to its customers. However, the e-commerce company has neither admitted nor denied the FTC’s allegations. Amazon stated that the company and its executives have always complied with the law.

Payment Schedule

Amazon will issue refunds to eligible Prime members starting with automatic payments made between November 12th and December 24th. Prime members who don’t receive an automatic refund can file a claim starting December 24th. These customers will receive notification to file a claim between December 24th and January 23rd.

Eligibility Criteria

Only customers who signed up for Amazon Prime between June 23, 2019 and June 23, 2025 are eligible for a refund. Customers qualify for automatic payment if they have signed up for Prime or have unsuccessfully attempted to cancel their membership through Amazon’s "challenged signup process". The FTC also stated that these customers could not have used more than three Amazon Prime Benefits in a 12-month period.

Receiving Payment

Eligible customers will receive a refund via PayPal or Venmo, which they must accept within 15 days. If you prefer a check, you should ignore the PayPal or Venmo refund. Once you fail to use PayPal or Venmo payment, Amazon will send you a check to the default shipping address specified in your Prime subscription. If you receive a check, please cash it within 60 days.

Refund Amount

Eligible Prime customers could receive up to $51, according to the FTC. The refund amount will vary depending on the individual customer’s situation. The FTC settlement required Amazon to pay those people who clearly qualified without them having to do anything.
