Introduction to Vizz Eye Drops
There is a new FDA-approved eye drop on the market called Vizz. These once-daily prescription eye drops are designed to help combat presbyopia, also known as age-related blurred vision. Drug maker LENZ Therapeutics advertises that just one drop in each eye will improve a person’s vision for up to 10 hours, eliminating the need to wear reading glasses.
How Vizz Eye Drops Work
Dr. Robert Johnson Jr. has run Johnson Family Eyecare in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, for 46 years, and he explains that these eye drops essentially act like a focus on a camera lens. Vizz and its predecessor drug, Vuity, both have the same structural function: they cause your iris, or the colored part of your eye, to become smaller and smaller. As the pupil gets smaller, it becomes clearer, like looking through a pinhole, and the depth of field increases.
Pricing and Side Effects
The price of Vizz is $79 per month for 25 doses and $198 for three months and 75 doses, but prices may vary at different pharmacies. There are some side effects including eye redness, headaches and reduced vision.
Effectiveness and Limitations
Dr. Johnson warns that while these new eye drops may help some, they are not a panacea for presbyopia, but just another good tool in the fight against age-related blurred vision. It will work much better in the younger, 40, 50, 55-year-old patients than in the 60, 65, 70-year-old patients. Because they have less of a need to concentrate. When you get to my age, the natural ability to concentrate is completely gone. So the pupil would have to be forced to become smaller and smaller. And when that pupil gets too small, we start to lose the amount of light that gets into the eye, and now you have a 70-year-old who can read, but who can’t drive a car when the sun goes down.
Consultation and Recommendation
Dr. Johnson advises those interested to consult their eye doctor to determine whether these eye drops are right for you.
