Introduction to Elon Musk’s Potential $1 Trillion Pay Package

Elon Musk could be on his way to a $1 trillion pay package. Tesla have shareholders approved the huge financial package for the CEO – already worth an estimated $491 billion – if it achieves a series of ambitious goals over the next 10 years.

Understanding the Value of $1 Trillion

But that figure of $1 trillion is hard to imagine for most people. To put it into perspective, if placed end to end, a trillion one-dollar bills would travel a distance of approximately 156 billion meters. That could circle the equator 3,890 times, easily reach the sun from Earth or loop from Earth to the moon 405 times.

What Can You Do with $1 Trillion?

With $1 trillion, the possibilities are endless.

Spending on Sports

You could compete in virtually every major sports league in the world. The clubs that make up the Premier League are relatively cheap, and even if you buy the UEFA Champions League clubs and the top five leagues of Spain, Italy, Germany, and France, that still leaves $858 billion in the coffers. The four major US sports leagues of ice hockey, baseball, basketball, and American football have an approximate valuation of $544 billion.

Taking on Tesla’s Rival

He could buy the 15 largest listed automakers (excluding Tesla) by market capitalization. These include companies like Japan’s Toyota, Chinese automaker BYD, and luxury brands like Ferrari and Mercedes-Benz. The total bill would be a staggering $992 billion.

Buying Properties

He could buy up every single residential property in San Diego County – worth a total of $1 trillion. The total value of homes in the state of Tennessee is estimated at $957 billion. Or Maryland, which could be bought for $1.01 trillion if he finds a little more money.

Charitable Possibilities

There’s always the possibility that Musk could follow in the footsteps of Microsoft founder Bill Gates, who plans to give away 99% of his vast fortune over the next 20 years. He could give a portion of his stack of money to every single man, woman, and child in the United States. They would receive about $2,917.32, based on a population estimate of 342.7 million.

Paying Off Debt

With a trillion dollars, he could instantly rewrite history and wipe out the interest payments and national debt of dozens of sovereign nations around the world. Or Musk could wipe out the debts of Singapore or South Korea in one fell swoop. But when it comes to the most indebted countries, a trillion dollars wouldn’t even touch the sides. The US has $38.3 trillion in national debt, while the UK has a modest $4.1 trillion.
