Introduction to Drone Delivery in Dubai
Dubai launched its first drone delivery route in the Nad Al Sheba area, utilizing a mosque as a food pickup point. This innovative approach allows customers to place orders through Keeta Drone and have their food and drinks delivered from restaurants and cafes in Avenue Mall to the courtyard of the Nad Al Sheba Grand Mosque.
The Role of Mosques in Drone Delivery
With mosques serving as community and service centers in the United Arab Emirates, this move aims to capitalize on their position by integrating technology for the comfort and convenience of worshipers. The initiative positions mosques as smart hubs, providing environmentally friendly and fast delivery services.
Partnership and Implementation
The Nad Al Sheba drone route is the result of a partnership between the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, the Islamic Affairs and Community Activities Department, and Keeta Drone. This collaboration has enabled the public and private sectors to work together, providing smart and efficient delivery services.
Expansion of Drone Deliveries in Dubai
In December 2024, the Emirate’s DCAA awarded Keeta Drone the first license to deliver products in Dubai Silicon Oasis (DS), with six drones in the initial phase. Since then, the emirate has expanded delivery routes and set ambitious goals, aiming to cover 30 percent of the city with drone delivery services by next year and 70 percent within the next five years.
Advancements in Drone Technology
The UAE has also awarded Dubai Air Navigation Services (DANS) the country’s first certificate as a drone airspace services provider. DANS has developed a drone air traffic management platform that enables instant approvals for drone flights, integrates radar and weather data, and improves conflict detection and avoidance capabilities. This platform will be expanded to urban air mobility applications in the future.
