Introduction to Watzmann
The Watzmann is located in Southeast Germany, approximately a ten hours and twenty minutes drive from Utrecht. It stands at an impressive 2,713 meters, making it the second highest mountain in Germany after the Zugspitze. The mountain range consists of several peaks, earning it the nickname the “Watzmann Family”.
Geography and Climbing Routes
The Watzmann features an extremely steep rock face of 1,800 meters. These climbing routes are notorious for being among the most dangerous in Germany, with over a hundred mountaineers having lost their lives. This grim statistic has led to the mountain being nicknamed “Mountain of Destiny”.
Safe Hiking Routes
Despite the dangers, there is a safe route available for inexperienced hikers. This route leads to the Watzmannhause, a mountain hut that offers breathtaking views without the associated risks. The Watzmannhause is an ideal destination for those who want to experience the beauty of the Watzmann without putting themselves in harm’s way.
