Introduction to the No Kings Protest
Recently elected Writers Guild of America West President Michele Mulroney gave a powerful speech at the No Kings protest in Los Angeles. She denounced President Donald Trump and his administration’s recent actions to restrict the freedom of expression of Hollywood writers, particularly by targeting late-night shows.
The Importance of Free Speech
Mulroney began by emphasizing the significance of free speech in America. "As writers, words and stories are our currency. The freedom to express ourselves is a fundamental American right and the core of our democracy. And it is under attack by this administration. They are using every tool at their disposal to silence dissenting voices." She highlighted the recent attacks on Writers Guild members who used their platforms to criticize or question the government.
Attacks on Late-Night Shows
In recent months, several late-night shows have faced direct attacks for criticizing the government. For example, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert was abruptly canceled after Colbert made comments about Paramount’s settlement with Trump. Similarly, Jimmy Kimmel Live! was suspended for a monologue that was mildly critical of Trump’s supporters. The President of the United States even openly called for the removal of two other Writers Guild members: Seth Meyers and Jimmy Fallon.
The Role of Late-Night Shows in Society
Mulroney emphasized that late-night shows play a crucial role in society. "These late-night shows not only provide hundreds of good union jobs and much-needed laughs in these difficult times; they entertain and inform audiences across the country. They tell much more than just jokes, they tell the truth. And it’s clear that some people can’t handle the truth." She noted that the issue is not just about Hollywood, but about the fundamental right to disagree with those in power.
The Threat to Democracy
Mulroney warned that the attack on free speech is a threat to democracy. "This isn’t just about Hollywood. This is about our fundamental right as human beings to disagree with those in power. To debate, to argue, to question ideas. That’s one of the foundations of civil society." She also emphasized the importance of a free and independent media in a democratic society.
The Role of Media Consolidation
Mulroney highlighted the role of media consolidation in the attack on free speech. "We are now in an era of consolidated media, with fewer and fewer gatekeepers controlling what we can watch on television. We’ve all heard the FCC claim that ‘the public interest is best served by allowing free speech,’ but FCC Chairman Brendan Carr doesn’t hesitate to support attacks on those who challenge the government’s narrative." She noted that megacorporations have pushed for a pro-business administration that allows them to consolidate their control of the media at the expense of free speech.
The Response of the Writers Guild
Mulroney concluded her speech by stating that the Writers Guild will not stand idly by and allow these attacks to go unaddressed. "The Writers Guild stands here with all of you today to say loud and proud that we will speak out, write our truths, tell our stories, and fight like hell for free speech and independent media. When our voices are strong and clear, when our words are powerful, we cannot be silenced. We have learned time and time again that when we fight, we win!"
Nationwide Support for the No Kings Protest
The No Kings protest has received nationwide support, with millions taking to the streets across the country. Prominent Hollywood stars such as Glenn Close, Spike Lee, and Jean Smart have expressed their strong support for the nationwide Dissent Day. In addition to Mulroney, well-known political and media personalities have taken to the stage in various cities to address voters who came to the demonstration. In Washington, D.C., Bernie Sanders, Bill Nye, and journalist Mehdi Hasan warned of the country slipping into fascism.
