Snoop Dogg Teams Up with GLAAD to Support Spirit Day
Snoop Dogg has partnered with GLAAD to support Spirit Day, an anti-bullying initiative for LGBTQ+ youth. As part of the campaign, the rapper sat down with "The Voice" alum Jeremy Beloate, a member of the LGBTQ+ community, for a special Spirit Day talk. The two discussed their recent collaboration on a new song titled "Love Is Love," which is featured on Snoop’s animated children’s YouTube series "Doggyland."
The Message of Love and Acceptance
In the conversation, Snoop emphasized the importance of love and acceptance, saying, "It’s a beautiful thing that kids can have parents from all walks of life and be shown love, be taught what love is… having parents from all walks of life, whether it’s two dads, two moms, whatever, love is the key." The song "Love Is Love" celebrates the love shared between families, regardless of their composition.
The Children’s Show "Doggyland"
In the children’s show, Beloate voices a puppy named Zippy, who joins the Doggyland pups to sing "Love Is Love." Snoop voices Bow Wizzle, one of the series’ main characters. The song features lyrics that promote love and acceptance, such as "Our parents are different / No two are the same / But one thing is for sure: Love won’t change" and "Families are special / They are so unique / Everyone has a purpose, more than what meets the eye / We love you, parents / We love you so."
Snoop’s Statement on Spirit Day
Snoop said in a statement, "At the end of the day, it’s all about love – that’s what we’re teaching kids with ‘Love Is Love.’ Partnering with GLAAD for Spirit Day just felt right because spreading love and respect for everyone is what real gangstas do. We’re showing the next generation that kindness is cool, inclusion is powerful and love always wins.”
A Shift in Snoop’s Perspective
Snoop’s partnership with GLAAD and his new song "Love Is Love" come months after the rapper made controversial comments about the Pixar film "Lightyear." On an August episode of the "It’s Giving" podcast, Snoop Dogg expressed his discomfort with the film’s depiction of a same-sex relationship. However, his recent conversation with Beloate suggests a shift in his perspective, as he emphasized the importance of teaching children about love and acceptance.
Using Music to Promote Understanding
During his conversation with Beloate, Snoop explained that "Love Is Love" is about "teaching parenting, teaching the situation that kids and the world are going through right now – through song, dance, melody – and just trying to get more understanding and clarity about how we live and how we live." He continued, "This is a program that we’ve been doing for years where we involve kids, and these are things that kids have questions about. Now hopefully we can help answer those questions and help them live a happy life and understand that love is love."
