Britney Spears Responds to Ex-Husband’s Claims
Britney Spears has issued a response after her ex-husband Kevin Federline made claims about her parenting in his new memoir, You Thought You Knew. Ahead of the book’s release on October 21st, The New York Times released an excerpt from "You Thought You Knew" in which Federline claims her children woke up "with a knife in her hand" while Spears watched them sleep.
The Allegations
In the penultimate chapter, Federline writes of their condition: "The clock is ticking and we are approaching the 11th hour. If things don’t change, something bad will happen, and my greatest fear is that our sons will be left holding the broken pieces." These allegations have sparked a response from Spears, who is now telling her side of the story.
Spears’ Response
In a post on Instagram, the Grammy winner wrote: “The constant gaslighting of [my] Ex-husband is extremely hurtful and stressful. I always begged and screamed to have a life with my boys. Relationships with teenage boys are complex. I felt demoralized by this situation and have always asked and almost begged for them to be part of my life. Unfortunately, they have always experienced the lack of respect shown to them [their] own father for me. You have to take responsibility for yourself. One son has only seen me for 45 minutes in the last 5 years and the other has only had 4 visits in the last 5 years. I’m proud too. From now on I will inform you when I am available.”
Attacking the Book
She added, attacking Federline’s book directly: "Trust me, these white lies in this book go straight to the bank and I’m the only one who’s really hurt here. I will always love her and if you really know me you won’t pay attention to the tabloids about my mental health and drinking. I’m actually a pretty intelligent woman who has tried to live a holy and private life for the last five years. I’m talking about, Because I’ve had enough and any real woman would do the same.”
Background
Federline and Spears married in 2004 and Spears filed for divorce two years later in 2006. They have two sons, a 19-year-old and a 20-year-old. The custody battle and allegations of poor parenting have been a long-standing issue between the two, with Spears now fighting back against Federline’s claims in his memoir.
