Francis Ford Coppola’s Career Ups and Downs

Director Francis Ford Coppola has had many ups and downs in his career. By his own admission, he was either extremely rich or completely broke. However, things changed irrevocably for him in 1972, when he presented to the world his magnificent adaptation of Mario Puzo’s “The Godfather”. The epic crime saga was an instant hit and is still revered over 50 years later. The popularity of the film was so great that it became the number one title on the free streaming service Pluto TV on October 8, according to FlixPatrol.

The Godfather’s Influence and Success

With Al Pacino, Marlon Brando, Robert Duvall, Talia Shire, and James Caan, “The Godfather” may stay the most influential film of all time and inspired everything from DreamWorks animated films to children’s picture books. It grossed nearly $300 million worldwide with a reported budget of just over $5 million. “The Godfather” has often been ranked among the best films of all time by several publications and was ranked 12th in the 2022 ten-year edition of Sight & Sound magazine. Coppola directed such acclaimed classics as “The Conversation”, “Apocalypse Now”, and “The Godfather Part II”.

Coppola’s Passion Project: Megalopolis

Coppola recently released his passion project spanning over three decades: “Megalopolis”. He famously had a difficult time financing and releasing the film, and ended up selling part of his wine empire to eventually make it. The film cost over $120 million but only grossed around $15 million worldwide and received a divisive critical response. “Megalopolis” currently has a score of 45% on aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads: “Francis Ford Coppola’s work is more of a creative manifesto than a compelling narrative film.” A documentary about the making of the film entitled “Megadoc” recently came into cinemas.

The Godfather’s Enduring Legacy

“The Godfather” is a testament to Coppola’s skill as a director and his ability to create timeless classics. The film’s influence can still be seen in many aspects of popular culture, and its enduring legacy is a tribute to Coppola’s vision and craftsmanship. With its engaging storyline, memorable characters, and outstanding performances, “The Godfather” continues to captivate audiences and inspire new generations of filmmakers.

Watch The Godfather and Megalopolis at Home

Both “The Godfather” and “Megalopolis” are available to watch at home, and fans of Coppola’s work can experience his masterful storytelling and direction in the comfort of their own homes. Whether you’re a longtime fan of “The Godfather” or interested in exploring Coppola’s more recent work, these films are sure to provide hours of entertainment and inspiration.
