Introduction to Paramount+’s New Acquisition

Paramount+ has acquired the legal thriller Discretion, starring Nicole Kidman and Elle Fanning, in a competitive situation. This move represents a significant turning point for the streaming department of Paramount in the new David Ellison era. The series, consisting of eight episodes, is produced by A24 and is set to begin production in 2026.

Plot and Production

Based on Chandler Baker’s adaptation of her short story of the same name, Discretion follows an employee of a law firm in Dallas who uncovers the company’s truth and thereby disturbs her relationship with her mentor and senior partner. The series is expected to explore themes of power, loyalty, and deception in the legal world.

Impact on the Film Industry

The acquisition of Discretion reflects a recent big swing from Paramount Pictures, which has been aggressive in securing new projects. This move has sparked speculation about whether the revived streaming department under the new ownership of Paramount will have an impact on the film business. According to sources, original films are not currently the priority for Paramount+, but the company has been actively acquiring titles from third-party providers.

Paramount+’s Strategy

The news reveals that Paramount+ is taking a more aggressive approach to acquiring new content. The company has signed an exclusive contract with Stranger Things creator The Duffer Brothers and has been actively pursuing new projects. This shift in strategy has led to speculation about whether Paramount+ will become a major player in the film industry.

The Role of Pay TV

The scarcity of Pay TV offers and the fact that streamers are making low-ball offers have made it challenging for independent cinema rental companies to secure minimum guarantees. As some PAY TV contracts are set to be renewed, this could be an opportunity for an ambitious streamer like Paramount+ to make a significant impact. According to sources, Paramount+ could be an ideal pay TV partner for a company like 101 studios.

The Cast and Their Upcoming Projects

Nicole Kidman has completed production on Practical Magic 2 and the title role in the crime series from Prime Video Shoe. Her latest credits include Baby Girl and the Netflix TV show Dream Couple. Elle Fanning will be seen in Joachim Trier’s film Sentimental Value and Predator: Badlands, both of which are set to open on November 7th. Her credits include A Complete Unknown.
