Introduction to Chris Aronson’s Departure
Chris Aronson, the President of Domestic Theatrical Distribution at Paramount Pictures, will be leaving the studio on December 1st. This move is part of the ongoing management changes under the new ownership of David Ellison. Aronson is a well-respected and popular executive known for his insightful presentations and sharp jokes, particularly at Cinemacon events.
Career Highlights and Achievements
Aronson has had a distinguished career, marked by significant achievements. One of his most notable successes was the release of "Top Gun: Maverick" in 2022, which grossed an impressive $718.7 million, making it the fifth-highest grossing film of all time. He also played a crucial role in the success of the "Sonic the Hedgehog" franchise, which has generated nearly $600 million in North America since 2020. Additionally, Aronson was instrumental in the release of other successful films, including "Avatar" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" during his time at FOX.
Support for the Cinema Experience
Aronson is a strong advocate for the cinema experience. In 2023, Paramount launched its variable pricing initiative, "8 for $80," in conjunction with the comedy film "80 for Brady." This initiative offered pre-show tickets for $8, significantly lower than the average ticket price at the time. Aronson’s commitment to the cinema experience is evident in his efforts to make movies more accessible and affordable for audiences.
Future Plans and Departure
Aronson will remain at the studio to oversee the North American release of Edgar Wright’s science fiction remake, "The Running Man," starring Glen Powell, on November 14th. His departure follows that of other high-profile executives, including Marc Weinstock, Michael Ireland, and Brian Robbins. Aronson’s memo to employees expressed his gratitude and pride in the team’s accomplishments, stating, "I believe more than ever in the power of the cinema experience, and I know that if we continue to work with our partners in the exhibition space and are not afraid to be agents of change, we can continue to drive the cinema forward."
