Commemorating the Fallen: A Light and Sound Tribute
The Gloucester cathedral is being transformed into an immersive light and sound show to honor those who gave their lives in the world wars. This event will take place from Friday, October 17 to Saturday, October 25, serving as a reminder of VE and VJ Day.
An Immersive Experience
The interior of the cathedral will be surrounded by projections of poppies, accompanied by a custom-made soundtrack. This soundtrack is designed to replicate the experience of walking through the fields of Flanders, creating a poignant and immersive experience for visitors.
A Fitting Tribute
According to the Very Reverend Andrew Zihni, Dean of Gloucester, "It is deeply fitting that this experience takes place here, where the topics of peace and hope are an essential part of our daily mission." This event highlights the importance of remembering and honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
Additional Installations
A series called Falling Leaves will also be featured, where each leaf represents one of the millions of lives lost during World War I and World War II. This installation will also include an artistic reflection on the Battle of the Somme, providing a powerful and moving tribute to the fallen.
A Return to Gloucester
This installation marks the return of Luxmuralis to Gloucester, following their previous event, Eternal Light, in 2023. Lorna Giles, Head of Visitor Experience at the cathedral, expressed her excitement about the return of Luxmuralis, stating, "I have such fond memories of Eternal in 2023, and we look forward to welcoming visitors again to experience the wonderful work of Luxmuralis with Poppy Fields."
An Invitation to Reflect
This immersive experience invites everyone to pause, reflect, and enjoy the breathtaking light projections that bring the cathedral’s architecture to life. It provides a unique opportunity for visitors to connect with the past and honor the memories of those who have given their lives in service.
