Introduction to Boeing’s New Single-Aisle Aircraft

Boeing is in the early stages of developing a new single-aisle aircraft that would replace the 737 Max, according to people familiar with the matter. This development comes after the 737 Max was grounded worldwide in 2019 following two fatal accidents that killed 346 people.

Background of the 737 Max

The 737 Max was introduced in 2017 but faced significant issues after the fatal accidents, which exposed Boeing’s profits and led to lawsuits, investigations, and a criminal investigation by the US Department of Justice. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) increased the grounding regulations in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Recent Developments

Last Friday, the FAA announced that it would issue airworthiness certificates for around 737 Max jets starting this week, a authority that was revoked in 2019 after the second fatal crash of the model in Ethiopia. Boeing’s CEO met with officials from Rolls-Royce Holdings in the UK earlier this year to discuss a new engine for the aircraft.

Design and Planning

The US plane maker has designed the flight deck of a new narrow-body aircraft, according to the report, and the development remains in the early planning phase, with final decisions still to be made. Boeing’s restoration plan is on track, with priorities including the delivery of around 6,000 commercial aircraft and the certification of previously announced models.

Regulatory Examination

However, Boeing continues to face regulatory scrutiny. At the beginning of 2024, the FAA imposed a production limit of 38 per month for 737 Max aircraft after a blowout with medium air on a new Alaska Airlines jet, which later lacked four screws. This incident prompted the US Department of Justice to open a criminal investigation, citing that Boeing did not comply with a 2021 settlement after the company misled the FAA into issuing the 737 Max regulatory certificate.
