Introduction to Aitor Throup’s Retrospective
A new retrospective of the Burnley artist Aitor Throup will be shown in his hometown this month to mark the end of the British textile Biennale. The British Textile Biennial (BTB) is an event that has been staged in Lancashire every two years, which shows the rich textile history of the United Kingdom and commissions artists to produce works that are inspired by the past, present, and future of the industry.
The Exhibition
A retrospective exhibition of Aitor’s designs, sculptures, and drawings from the past 20 years will be shown in Burnley’s Empire Theater. The listed class II theater has not been in use since 1995 and is at risk of being forgotten. The exhibition will feature a wide range of Aitor’s work, including his iconic designs and sculptures.
Aitor Throup’s Background
Aitor Throup was born in the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires before moving to Burnley in 1992. He said he was "always loud" about his passion for the city of Lancashire. As a 12-year-old immigrant, the city took over him and exposed him to a culture of striving, innovation, and authenticity that never left him. It was on the terraces of the Burnley Football Club, where his fascination with experimental clothing design was born.
Inspiration and Career
Aitor Throup’s work has been inspired by his experiences in Burnley and his fascination with football culture. He has previously designed costumes for the Hunger Games film series and has worked with brands such as CP Company and Stone Island. These brands, which are known for their militarily inspired jackets, would become a synonym for the "Terrace Casual" culture of football fans in northern England.
Secondary Exhibition
A second exhibition of Throup’s sculptures and drawings will take place in Galerie 123. The building was originally a retail business, where a young Throup was first inspired by the designs of the Italian Massimo Osti – the founder of Clothing Brands CP Company and Stone Island. This exhibition will feature a selection of Throup’s work, including his iconic sculptures and drawings.
Exhibition Details
From the moor – a retrospective of Aitor Throup’s imagination is open from October 30th to November 2. The secondary exhibition at Gallery 123 will open on October 20 and run until November 2. Both exhibitions will provide a unique insight into Aitor Throup’s work and his inspiration from the city of Burnley.
