Introduction to the 69th BFI London Film Festival
The 69th BFI London Film Festival (LFF) is just around the corner, taking place from October 8th to 19th. This year’s festival promises to be an exciting event, with a talented lineup of jurors and filmmakers.
Official Competition Jury
The official competition jury will be headed by Elizabeth Karlsen, a renowned producer known for her work on films like The Salt Path and Carol. Karlsen is also a member of the BFI governor council and produces films through her British outfit, Number 9 Films. She will be joined on the jury by The New Yorker film critic Justin Chang and US artist and filmmaker Kahlil Joseph, whose feature film Blknws: General Terms and Conditions premiered at Sundance earlier this year.
First Feature Competition Jury
The first feature competition jury, also known as the Sutherland Award, will be led by British filmmaker Kibwe Tavares, who co-directed the LFF 2023 Closing Night Film The Kitchen with Daniel Kaluuya. Tavares will be accompanied on the jury by Anja Fröher, head of the program at the Zurich Film Festival, and Sudan-UK filmmaker Nadia Latif, whose horror film The Man in My Basement premiered in Toronto.
Grierson Award Jury
The Grierson Award for the best documentary will be judged by a jury led by British director Eloïse King, whose film The Shadow Scientists will premiere at LFF 2024. King will be joined on the jury by US curator Josh Siegel and Australian curator Reece Goodwin from the Australian Center for the Moving Image (ACMI).
Short Film Jury
The short film jury will be led by Ming-Jung Kuo, the former artistic director of the Singapore International Film Festival and international festival consultant. Kuo will be joined on the jury by UK Filipino author and actor Matty Crawford and Swiss-UK animation director Lee Ott.
Audience Participation
In addition to the official juries, the audience will also have the opportunity to participate in the festival by voting for their favorite feature films and British feature films. This will give festival-goers a chance to have their say and recognize the talented filmmakers showcasing their work at the LFF.
