Taylor Swift’s New Album Sparks Speculation
Introduction to the Album
Taylor Swift’s new album, released on Friday, has fans scrambling to figure out who the songs are about, particularly in one track. The song, a romantic tune, deals with an unnamed pop star, and social media has inflated speculation that it is a Charli XCX diss track.
The Speculated Diss Track
In a cinema screening to accompany the new album, Swift announced that the title "is a love letter to someone who hates you." The 35-year-old pop star did not say who the song is about, but she thanked them sarcastically for drawing her attention and said: "It is flattering." The seventh track on Swift’s album, "The Life of a Showgirl," refers to another singer who describes Swift as "boring Barbie" and writes songs about how much they hate her.
Connection to Charli XCX
Fans on social media are convinced that this is a response to Charli XCX’s song "Sympathy is a Knife" from her album "Brat," which the 33-year-old supposedly wrote about Swift. In this song, Charli writes that she feels uncertain about a woman who appears backstage when her friend appears. She adds: "I don’t know if it’s real or if I’m spiraling. A voice tells me that you laugh, says George: ‘I’m just paranoid.’" Charli’s then-friend, now-husband George Daniel, is the drummer of the band The 1975, and Swift briefly dated the band’s frontman, Matty Healy.
Swift’s Response
In her new track, Swift sings about how much time another pop star is devoting to her. She sings: "It sounded nasty, but it feels like you’re flirting with me." She also says: "All the effort you’ve put in, it’s actually romantic." None of the stars have confirmed whether their songs are about each other. Last year, Swift showered Charli with compliments in an interview with New York Magazine, saying: "I was overwhelmed by Charli’s melodic sensitivity since I first heard her in 2011."
Fan Reactions
On Friday, a "Swiftogeddon" club night in Clapham, South London, partygoers admitted that they had spent the day thinking about everything. Super fan and DJ Dave Fawbert, who runs the night entirely dedicated to Taylor Swift’s music, said: "She never gives it away, but I think this song is definitely about Charli XCX." The 24-year-old Anya from Brighton, who attended the party with her friend Scarlett, 21, said that she doesn’t have to do much decoding "because the internet does it for me." She felt that "Actually Romantic" could be about Charli and added that she could relate to the lyrics. "It’s universal, we all had this feeling," she said to BBC News.
Criticism and Speculation
However, Tanya, a 27-year-old Charli XCX fan, said she didn’t think it was "very fair or feminist" of Swift to make shots at her. "I don’t think she should have done it. But hey, freedom of expression, I guess." Fans have long tried to decode Swift’s lyrics and figure out who she is referencing. This new album is no exception. Apart from the songs about her fiancé Travis Kelce, other new tracks that are subject to internet speculation are "Father Figure" (thought to be about music manager Scott Borchetta) and "Opalite" (about Kelce’s ex, Kayla Nicole). Swift, known for writing several breakup tracks, said beforehand that she would never confirm who her songs are about.
