International Writers Unite Against Cultural Colonialism
The International Association of Writers Guilds (IAWG) is set to hold its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in India for the first time, where writers from around the world will gather to discuss key issues affecting their industry. One of the main topics on the agenda is the issue of "cultural colonialism," which refers to the exploitation of writers from the global south by large entertainment companies.
What is Cultural Colonialism?
Cultural colonialism is a term used to describe the way in which multinational studios and streaming platforms take advantage of writers from the global south, paying them lower rates and offering them fewer rights than their western counterparts. This can include unfair payment, lack of residuals, and limited creative control. Writers from the global south are fighting back against this exploitation, demanding fair treatment and equal rights.
A Moment of International Solidarity
According to Anjum Rajabali, Senior Writer and Screenwriters Association (SWA) of the Indian Committee, the AGM is "not just an event – it’s a moment of international solidarity." Writers from all over the world are coming together to fight for their rights and to support one another in their struggles against exploitation. The meeting will provide a platform for writers to share their experiences, discuss strategies, and work together to create positive change.
The AGM in Mumbai
The AGM will take place in Mumbai, India’s most populous city, from October 6 to 8. The event will be attended by representatives from the Writers Guild of America (West & East), the Authors Guild of Great Britain, and the Authors Guild of Canada, as well as delegates from European Guilds, Australia, New Zealand, Latin America, Africa, and other parts of Asia. The meeting will be a global forum for the discussion and defense of writer rights, and will provide an opportunity for writers to come together and support one another.
Fighting for Fair Treatment
The IAWG is working to ensure that writers are treated fairly and with respect. This includes developing strategies to ensure fair contracts, standard contracts, and collective bargaining. The organization is also working to prevent discriminatory practices by producers, studios, and streaming platforms. By standing united, writers can fight against exploitation and demand the rights and respect they deserve.
A Global Movement
The AGM is part of a larger global movement to protect writer rights and promote fair treatment. The meeting will build on the momentum of recent guild negotiations, such as the US work strike in 2023, and will provide a platform for writers to share their experiences and work together to create positive change. By united, writers can create a more just and equitable industry, where all writers are valued and respected.
